RMA alumnus, friend, and former Arthur Anderson, Inc., consultant, Carlos Cervantes told me that Mr. Anderson had a maxim for hiring new employees; "If in doubt, there is no doubt." I often remember this when on the fence relative to a new hire.
I like Marine Josh Rushing's quote on doing the right thing; "In the simple moral maxim the Marine Corps teaches - do the right thing for the right reason - no exception exists that says, unless there are consequences, criticism, or risk. Damn the consequences."
In the workplace and in the home, the behavior you tolerate you will get - and more. The human tendency is to stretch the boundaries of any organization until the bell sounds signaling enough is enough.
Affirmation comes to those who exhibit moderation in everything but their life's work.
My final thought of today relates to my experience in Viet Nam. I was older and slightly more mature than my peer lieutenants, nonetheless, my emotions ran the spectrum from tension ->stress->fear->abject fear->rage. I suspect that most Medals of Honor were won when the emotions reached the rage stage. Even today, I believe that my ability to control my emotions during stressful times emanated from that experience.
