Wise Counsel

Someone once wrote that, "I know if I only do what I am paid to do, I will only be paid for what I do." The corollary is always do more than is asked of you. I remember this aphorism when I examine resumes and references of prospective employees and when I consider pay increases for top performers.
I recall Jesus' wise counsel to his apostles when he said, "When you have done everything you were told to do, you should tell the Master, 'we are unworthy as we have done only what we were told to do'."
